Philosophy Major Concentration in Ethics and Civic Life

Description The Department of Philosophy's optional philosophy major concentration in ethics and civic life is an opportunity for philosophy majors who are interested in ethics and community service to relate their experiences in the classroom to their work in the community, and vice versa. Students who complete the requirements for the concentration will receive acknowledgement on their transcripts of their accomplishments in this concentration. Such recognition will not only honor the student and enhance his or her ability to secure responsible employment but will also affirm the Department's commitment to the education of students for meaningful roles in social and civic engagements. Requirements Students may fulfill the requirements for the concentration by completing three of the following approved courses and a community service component: |

| The community service component may be completed by taking one of the following: | |
| • One practicum course in philosophy
(for example, a student may complete 1007 in conjunction with 1004w) • A community service component of one of the above courses • A directed study in Philosophy with a community service component |
How to Enroll Philosophy majors who are interested in the concentration in ethics and civic life should obtain a copy of the enrollment form from the Department of Philosophy main office, 831 Heller Hall, or from Professor Valerie Tiberius, the Director of Undergraduate Studies. The white copy of the form should be returned to the academic advising office (122 Johnston Hall) and the yellow copy to the Director of Undergraduate Studies. The forms must be completed after you declare your major in philosophy and at least one semester prior to your graduation. Students should keep the pink copy of the form.
